First time bouldering: what to pack

Your complete first-time climbing checklist — what to bring, what to wear, and what your first session actually looks like.

Most bouldering gyms rent shoes and sell chalk at the front desk, so you could walk in with just comfortable clothes and a water bottle. But having your own gear makes the experience noticeably better — better fit, better grip, and one less thing to think about.

Here is exactly what to bring, what to leave behind, and what to expect.

01 · Essentials

The essentials

01
Climbing Shoes — Rent at the gym or bring your own for better grip and fit
02
Chalk & Chalk Bag — Keeps hands dry for a stronger, more confident grip
03
Comfortable Clothes — Stretchy trousers or shorts and a fitted t-shirt
04
Water Bottle — At least 500ml — climbing is more tiring than it looks
05
Small Towel — Wipe chalk, sweat, and dust off hands and shoes

On shoes: Rental shoes work for your first few visits ($3-$8), but own shoes give you better grip, fit, and hygiene. See our shoe reviews.

On chalk: Without it, sweaty palms betray you after ten minutes. A chalk bag and chalk ball is all you need. See our chalk reviews.

02 · Optional

Nice to have

Finger Tape

Protects raw skin on fingertips

Nail Clippers

Short nails prevent painful catches

Change of Clothes

You will be sweatier than expected

Snacks

Banana or energy bar for longer sessions

Heading outdoors? A crash pad is essential. Indoor gyms have their own padded flooring.

03 · Avoid

What NOT to bring

×
Jewellery. Rings catch on holds and can cause serious finger injuries. Remove watches, bracelets, and necklaces too.
×
Heavy Cologne / Perfume. Enclosed space + chalk dust + sweat + strong fragrance = unpleasant for everyone.
×
Your Ego. You will struggle on routes that children breeze up. Every experienced climber started where you are.
04 · Clothing

What to wear

✓ Do wear
  • Stretchy trousers, leggings, or shorts
  • Fitted t-shirt or tank top
  • Supportive sports bra for women
  • Closed-toe shoes around the gym
× Avoid
  • × Jeans (restrict hip movement)
  • × Dangly jewellery (catches on holds)
  • × Very baggy tops (block your view)
  • × Belts (dig in on overhangs)
05 · First session

Your first session

WhenWhat to do
15 min beforeArrive early — Fill out registration, sign the waiver, get orientated
First 20 minWarm up on easy routes — Start on V0 and V1 problems with large, friendly holds
Main sessionTry harder problems — Work your way up — take breaks when forearms pump out
Between attemptsWatch and learn — Observe other climbers for "beta" (tips on how to solve routes)
ThroughoutStay safe — Never stand below someone climbing — falls are normal

Rest between attempts. When your forearms pump out, step off the wall, shake out, drink water. Three good attempts with rest beat ten desperate ones.

Watch other climbers. "Beta" is climbing slang for how to solve a route. Most climbers are happy to share tips if you ask.

Stay out of the fall zone. Never stand directly below someone climbing.
